Are you interested in connecting with leaders and educators of color committed to educational equity?
Do you have an innovative idea on how to address issues of inequities and would like to share it with community members?
Or do you just want to chill, be inspired, and be surrounded by leaders and educators of color in our state?
EduLeaders of Color Rhode Island provides a space where you can do all of the above. We are developing an ecosystem of leaders and educators of color to build our network, social capital, and elevate our voices. This work involves everyone and so we welcome all but specifically focus on creating a supportive space for groups of people that historically have been underserved and, marginalized.
Our February 2019 meetup will be hosted at the Rhode Island PBS Studios. We will feature several leaders from different backgrounds who are working to improve the lives of our young people.
Stephanie is a proud daughter of Central Falls. She is a graduate of Central Falls High School and Boston College where she received a B.A. in English. Stephanie has been closely connected to schools in Rhode Island through her role as a Trustee of the Central Falls School District and formerly as Associate Director of Partnerships at Blackstone Valley Prep. She is the co-founder of The Central Falls Alumni Association, Millennial Rhode Island, and most recently, Parents Leading for Educational Equity (PLEE) - an organization that will focus on elevating the voices of parents of color in the educational equity space. Stephanie is a first-year law student at Roger Williams University School of Law. Most importantly, she is the mom to Omar Ernesto.
Amber was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA, where she earned a BA in Sociology from UCLA and an MA in Education from Pepperdine University. After working as an assistant teacher in both the public and private school settings for five years, Amber moved to Las Vegas, NV, where she was a grade 4 teacher in a private school for nine years. Amber has been in Rhode Island for almost four years now. She has worked at the Henry Barnard School, the French-American School, and is currently at the Lincoln School. As a life-long lover of both reading and questioning everything, Amber believes in the power of filling her classroom with culturally relevant books as well as always causing Good Trouble with and for her students.
Brittney is a Senior Associate on the Quality Performance Assessment team at the Center for Collaborative Education. She’s served as a classroom teacher and school leader. She currently coaches teacher teams in the design and implementation of learning experiences that are of high technical quality, free of bias, engaging, and aligned to the skills, dispositions and content knowledge students deserve to practice and master. She works hard to center and amplify traditionally suppressed voices, experiences and ways of knowing in her work with schools and districts.
Julianna Charles Brown
Julianna works with the Quality Performance Assessment Team at Center for Collaborative Education to help teachers and schools implement equitable performance assessment systems. She is passionate about crafting dynamic policy solutions that drive equity. Julianna began her career at the NYCDOE in policy, working with schools on programming and providing guidance on working within state regulations, and was on the founding team of the NYC Mastery Collaborative, supporting schools in their implementation of CBE and CRE practices and advocating for the work to grow across the city. She has a B.A. in American History from McGill University and a M.A. in Education Policy from Teachers College at Columbia University.
