“Considered a fool ’cause I dropped out of high school
Stereotypes of a black male misunderstood
And it’s still all good.” – Biggie Smalls
Let’s keep building and making connections with like-minded folks around ways to fight against racial inequities in education at the next EduLeaders of Color R.I. Meetup. Join us at AS220 for some free drinks, food and some 90s hip hop music in between (think Biggie Smalls).
This gathering will focus on elevating the leadership, voice, and influence of historically marginalized groups in the RI education system and community. It also serves as a safe space where people can network and share resources and ideas. Our space welcomes ALL but specifically concentrates on supporting groups of people that historically have been underrepresented or marginalized.
This month’s meetup will feature representatives from AS220, Providence ¡CityArts! for Youth Inc., and the All In: Providence Education Summit:
AS220: AS220 is an artist-run organization committed to providing an unjuried and uncensored forum for the arts. AS220 offers artists opportunities to live, work, exhibit and/or perform in its facilities, which include several rotating gallery spaces, a performance stage, a black-box theater, a print shop, a darkroom and media arts lab, a fabrication and electronics lab, a dance studio, a youth program focusing on youth under state care and in the juvenile detention facilities, four dozen affordable live/work studios for artists, and a bar and restaurant. Learn more about AS220 here.
Providence ¡CityArts! for Youth Inc.: CityArts’ mission is to ensure Providence youth, ages 8- 14, have access to quality performing and visual arts programs – unhindered by socio-economic barriers. Their creative youth development programs link emerging and master teaching artists with over 900 youth at schools and at their South Providence studios. CityArts’ goals are to help young people develop their voices and recognize their potential as leaders in their communities. Learn more about Providence ¡CityArts! for Youth Inc. here.
All In: Providence Education Summit: The All In Providence Education Summit will bring together hundreds of community members (parents, students, educators, community and business leaders, and youth serving organizations) to build and support a cohesive vision for education in Providence, and to build momentum around student-centered community action. Participants at the Summit will develop a shared understanding of the different ways race and social equity impact our schools; learn about current citywide education initiatives; identify ways to be involved in improving our city’s schools; connect with others interested in supporting our schools; and provide input to shape citywide goals for our education system moving forward.
